WSOP Ratings Down

Ratings for the first two WSOP broadcasts of 2009 are down 8% from last year, apparently about 4% for the $40K and 12% for the Champions Invitational. For further details see Poker News Daily (1, 2).

Update, August 17: Ratings after three weeks are down 8%, according to Fox Business. That indicates that the third broadcast, the charitable tournament, was down about 8%. I expected much worse, as it's one of the worst ESPN poker broadcasts I've ever seen, which is saying a lot.

Update, September 25: Ratings were reportedly up 11% this year through four weeks of Main Event shows.

  1. This is what happens when you try to get cute. Just when you think they get it,they change things. Poker is not the NFL,MLB,NHL,or the NBA. When you have something that works stick with it and build on it. I always have and still think there were certain reasons why the WSOP broadcasts were better than the the WPT. In poker though, we don't have to change the broadcast schedule to include the champions tournament. Because basically, no one cares. Once you got down to the final 3 you lost 2/3 of the online kids watching because some weren't even born or were still being potty trained when McIvoy won.

  2. Miggity, I disagree whole heartedly. If the WSOP ratings are down it is because those two buffoons are trying to be the show. It gets sillier and sillier. It's about poker, not inane jokes and useless banter. I'd much rather watch the WPT and learn something and hear poker talk than listen to those nuts..
