Fox Sports Net Picks Up World Poker Tour

Fox Sports Net and the World Poker Tour inked an agreement to air 26 one-hour season 7 WPT episodes (press release). The timeslot and dates will be announced later, but PokerNews.com is reporting that it will air in the 6-10 PM range on Sunday evenings. The Bellagio Cup, which will comprise the first two episodes of season 7, is being filmed today in Las Vegas.

  1. 26 hours is a substantial reduction from the 46 hours being broadcast in the current season. It appears they'll have to drop one of the 14 announced (see World Poker Tour Season Seven To Film Only 14 Events For TV) stops in season 7.

  2. Short of a broadcast network or ESPN, I think Fox Sports is as good as WPT could have done: good demographics and wide distribution.

  4. There's a rumor that the WPT Championship isn't part of the deal. That would explain 26 instead of 28 hours despite 14 events being on the WPT season 7 schedule. I'd guess that WPTE is trying to make a separate deal to broadcast their biggest tournament.

  5. Fox Sports Net has started airing season one of the WPT at 8 PM Mondays. The first one was cut to one hour, however. The poker boom began with this show: the first use of hole cards in the United States, or anywhere in prime time. Remember the TV table for that first event: it was Scotty Nguyen, John Hennigan, John Juanda, Gus Hansen, Chris Bigler, and Kaseem (yes, Freddy) Deeb.
